How to Shop at an Antique Store in Lexington, Kentucky

Fri, 23 Oct 2026 14:50:07 GMT

A real antique and a well-made reproduction can look alike at first glance, but a close look at the construction and the signs of age will help you tell them apart. You protect both your budget and your home when you know what to look for at an antique store in Lexington, Kentucky. Use the tips below to size up any antique, then see where you can track some down right here in Lexington.

Construction details offer some of the best evidence of age. Look closely at three areas:

Inspect the Joinery and Hardware on an Antique White Dresser

Decades of use leave marks on the feet, edges, and drawer fronts of furniture, and a finish often darkens and mellows with age. Natural wear shows up in a pattern; the spots that hands and floors touch most wear the most, while protected areas, such as the inside of a drawer, stay lighter.

Check for Natural Signs of Age in an Antique’s Finish and Wear

An antique white mirror may show spots or dark streaks in its reflective backing, and an antique 3-drawer nightstand may have softened corners from years of use. A piece that looks flawless and showroom-new deserves extra questions, since it could be a reproduction or an antique that someone has heavily restored.

Joinery: Hand-cut dovetails often vary slightly in spacing and fit, whereas perfectly uniform joints suggest machine work. Factories began using power machinery in the 1830s, so uniform joints don’t necessarily rule out a late-1800s antique.
Hardware: Original pulls and hinges, like those on an antique wood dresser, pick up a worn patina from decades of handling, while bright, matching hardware and screws can signal replacements or a newer build.
Fit and finish: A drawer that sticks a little or sits slightly uneven can point to a handmade build, since hand-fitted drawers rarely sit perfectly flush. A drawer that glides with machine-like precision may signal a newer piece.

Some makers intentionally stain and distress reproductions. So, if you're inspecting what appears to be an antique grey dresser, run a finger along the drawer fronts and the corners, and check for color that looks identical on every surface. Crisp, sharp edges and uniform color from every angle typically indicate a newer piece.

A reproduction isn’t a dealbreaker; a good one can be a smart buy. However, you deserve to know which one you’re bringing home and pay a fair price for it.

Browse our social media and online gallery to get a feel for what’s on the floor. Updating Your Bedroom? Look for Unique Furniture Pieces

Mon, 21 Sep 2026 04:00:40 GMT

Your bedroom should feel like the best room in the house: calm, personal, and unmistakably yours. Yet too many bedrooms end up furnished with the same matching five-piece set that everyone else has. If you're ready for a refresh, this is your chance to create a room with real character. Here's how to choose bedroom furniture at Another Man's Treasure , from the essentials to the one-of-a-kind pieces that pull a room together.

It's right there in the name: your bedroom centers on your bed, making it the perfect centerpiece to build around. If you find the right one, your bed frame will set the tone for the entire room. A carved-wood frame brings warmth and history, a sleek upholstered headboard feels modern and soft, and a wrought-iron frame adds a touch of vintage appeal. Our inventory is always changing, so you'll never know exactly what you'll find, which is exactly how you end up with a piece full of character.

Start with the Right Bedframe

Keeping a similar wood tone or finish so the pieces feel related, even if the shapes differ.
Matching heights within a few inches of each other for visual balance.
Letting one piece carry unique hardware or detail so it reads as intentional, not accidental.

Your dresser is the workhorse of your bedroom, but it doesn't have to be boring. A solid-wood dresser with good bones offers vintage warmth and durability that mass-produced pieces could never match. And if you're short on closet space, a tall chest of drawers or an armoire with interesting details provides storage while doubling as a statement piece.

Dressers and Storage That Stand Out

Building a bedroom that fits your needs and personality means designing your space with distinctive furnishings and décor. There’s also just something truly special about discovering the perfect pieces to bring your vision to life.

Nightstands are another functional addition to your room, and they're a prime opportunity to add personality. You need somewhere to stash a lamp, a book, and a glass of water, but a matching pair isn't required. Designing a bedroom with nightstands that coordinate rather than match perfectly helps you avoid a cookie-cutter, showroom-style layout. A few easy ways to select nightstands without them looking mismatched include:

Your "extra" pieces are where your vision truly comes to life. A comfortable reading chair tucked in the corner makes the space feel lived-in, while a bench at the foot of the bed is both practical and polished. A vintage mirror opens the room and adds light, and a unique lamp or two sets the mood after dark. Together, these details make a bedroom feel complete.

Don't Forget the Finishing Pieces

Home Office Furniture Must-Haves

Fri, 21 Aug 2026 05:47:39 GMT

If your home office consists of a folding table and a dining chair (or worse, your living room couch) that wrecks your back by noon, it might be time to build the room you can comfortably spend your days in. A good home office helps separate work life from home life, offering a place to think, read, take a call, and occasionally stare out the window while an idea comes together.

If you need a little inspiration, here's how we'd approach it at Another Man's Treasure :

Everything revolves around your desk, making it the perfect starting point for a home office build. A writing desk is a classic choice with its clean, open design, and it’s perfectly suitable for a laptop and a notebook without carrying the bulk of a giant executive desk.

Start With the Desk

You should never skimp on the item that supports your body throughout the day, and your desk chair is one of them. Look for something that supports your back through a long stretch of work: a well-built chair with good bones will outlast the squeaky office-store version by years. Even better, the right one can double as a statement piece, too.

Overhead lighting alone makes a room feel flat and strains your eyes. Look for a good desk lamp for close work and a floor lamp to soften the space. Vintage and unique lamps are among the small touches that make a home office feel personal (not corporate), and they're an easy way to add character without committing to a big purchase.

Light It Well

A home office should feel like yours, not like a cubicle you happen to own. Since 1991, Another Man's Treasure has been Central Kentucky's destination for an ever-changing mix of new, closeout, and second-hand furniture, curated for people who want pieces with character rather than the same thing everyone else has. It's not a thrift store, and it's not a warehouse of identical desks. It's a treasure hunt .

If you need more room to spread out, a larger desk with drawers helps contain your clutter. Because our inventory is always rotating, you never know what you'll come across. One week, it might be a mid-century writing desk with tapered legs; the next, a solid oak piece with decades of history. That's the fun of shopping for unique home office furniture rather than buying the same flat-pack desk everyone else has — you’ll always find something with character.

Nobody ever walked into a room and admired a filing cabinet. A good bookshelf earns its keep twice over: holding your books and binders while adding height and character to your room. And when there's clutter you'd prefer to hide, a vintage cabinet or credenza tucks it away without looking like office furniture at all.

Back-to-School Furniture Shopping: Desks & Bookshelves, and More

Thu, 23 Jul 2026 08:43:06 GMT

The start of a new school year has a way of exposing every awkward corner of a house. Where's your teenager supposed to study? Where does the college kid stash a semester's worth of books? And what about the teacher who drags grading home every night? A good workspace makes it all easier, and Another Man's Treasure is here to help. Since 1991, our family-owned Lexington furniture shop has carried an ever-changing mix of new, used, antique, and closeout furniture, so back-to-school season is a good time to stop by and see what's on the floor.

Desks for Every Student

A high schooler doesn't need much for a studying setup, but they do need a spot that isn't the kitchen table. A solid wood desk lasts for years and looks better than the particleboard stuff that starts wobbling by October. For students juggling a laptop, a monitor, and a pile of textbooks, an L-shaped desk gives them room to spread out without taking over the entire bedroom. Dorm-bound? Look for compact options: a narrow desk that fits under a lofted bed can make a major difference in a tight space. And because our inventory shifts week to week, you never quite know what you'll find (which is half the fun). One visit might turn up a mid-century writing desk; the next, a roomy executive piece.

Every student ends up with more stuff than they planned for. Books, binders, supplies, the odd trophy — it all needs a home, and the right bookshelf keeps a room from sliding into chaos. Dark brown bookshelves add a touch of warmth and hide scuffs well (which is important in a busy study space). Black bookshelves lean modern and pair with just about anything, and a classic wood bookshelf never goes out of style. Browse our gallery , and you'll spot everything from tall library-style shelving to smaller units that tuck into a dorm corner.

Bookshelves That Do More

Teachers rarely leave their work at school. Lesson planning, grading, the endless emails — a lot of it happens at the kitchen counter when there's nowhere better to go. A dedicated office space changes that. A sturdy desk and a shelf or two for reference materials can carve out a productive workspace, even if it’s in a spare bedroom or a corner of the living room. Pick a desk you’re comfy sitting at, and that grading pile will feel a little less daunting. Office furniture that's built to last beats the flimsy, assemble-it-yourself kind, and you'll often find pieces here with more personality than anything in a big-box store.

Another Man’s Treasure isn’t a thrift store, and it’s not a warehouse of identical desks, either. We offer a curated mix of pieces you won't see anywhere else, with a focus on quality over clearance. Our constantly rotating inventory means the desk or bookshelf that catches your eye today may be gone tomorrow, so be sure to keep this in mind if you're on a back-to-school deadline.

Unique Furniture Finds for Summer Entertaining in Lexington

Thu, 25 Jun 2026 11:57:59 GMT

The best Lexington summers mean full calendars, from backyard dinners to friends dropping by long after the plates are cleared — and the furniture you host with sets the tone for all of it. If you would rather your space feel collected and personal than pulled straight from a catalog, Another Man's Treasure might just become your new favorite local furniture store.

Family-owned and operated since 1991, we are a curated mix of new, gently used, antique, and closeout furniture under one roof, with an inventory that changes constantly. That means the dining table or sideboard you fall for is often a one-of-a-kind piece you won’t see in anyone else's home.

A Dining Table That Anchors the Room

Acting as the foundation for your meal, every good dinner party starts at the table. A solid wood farmhouse table seats a crowd and shrugs off spills, while a round pedestal table keeps conversation flowing in a smaller space. Because our stock rotates, you might find a distressed white dining set one week and a rich walnut table with upholstered chairs the next. The furniture hunt is half the fun.

Serving space can make or break a party, but it also provides a great opportunity to showcase personal style. A vintage sideboard or buffet gives you room to lay out a spread and doubles as storage for the rest of the year. For drinks, a home bar or a rolling bar cart turns a corner into a gathering spot (and keeps people out of the kitchen as guests arrive). Picture a reclaimed-wood bar for a relaxed patio party or a curved bar with a marble top for something dressier. These are the standout pieces people hunt for, precisely because they’re not the same ones everybody else has.

Sideboards, Buffets, and Bar Carts

When the table is full, leverage flexible seating to keep everyone comfy and cozy. A pair of patterned armchairs or a few side chairs with character give guests somewhere to land and add color/texture to a room. Mixing seating instead of matching a set is a designer trick that comes across as intentional, and our endlessly rotating inventory makes it easy to find pieces that play well together.

Buying from a local furniture store means you can see, touch, and measure a piece before it comes home, and buying from a curated mix means you walk out with something that carries a little history and a lot of style. As a Lexington fixture for more than three decades, we have earned a loyal following and a few Best of Lex nods along the way. Our gallery offers a glimpse of the range, though the showroom is always the full experience.

Look for unique vintage pieces or solid wood options that develop character over time.

Even small starter homes benefit from dedicated dining spaces, creating a gathering space for meals or a place to work from home. We specialize in hard-to-find dining sets you won't find at your neighbor's house, from mid-century modern to farmhouse-style pieces built to last.

Bedroom Basics

Don't overlook bedroom furniture in your starter home budget, either. A quality bed frame, dresser, and nightstands transform bedrooms from crash pads into legitimate retreats. Refresh Your Lexington Home This Spring with One-of-a-Kind Furniture

Thu, 30 Apr 2026 07:24:38 GMT

How Our Inventory Works

Our inventory turns over constantly. That piece you saw last week? It’s likely gone now. But what's arriving tomorrow could be exactly what you've been searching for.

That's the nature of curated new and used furniture store shopping, and it’s part of why we love it so much. We're not ordering fifty identical sofas from a warehouse. We're finding one incredible piece, bringing it in, and selling it to someone who recognizes why it's special.

Visit our 507 E. 3rd Street location — whether you're hunting for something specific or plan to browse, we're open Tuesday through Saturday. Fridays and Saturdays are typically our busiest days, so we recommend visiting on Thursday mornings to see the new arrivals!

The Mix That Makes Us Different

Walk into Another Man's Treasure, and you'll see a blend of new furniture, right next to manufacturer closeouts and curated second-hand furniture.

New pieces give you that fresh-from-the-showroom look with full manufacturer backing. Closeout furniture means access to quality brands at a fraction of retail price, since we buy their excess inventory. Second-hand furniture brings character with solid construction, one-of-a-kind details, and styles that give your space its unique edge.

Why Spring Calls for Something New

Spring sunlight has a way of showing every flaw, from faded upholstery to scratches you never noticed. Rooms that felt cozy just a few months ago now feel cluttered or outdated.

Giving your space a refresh lets you shift the energy in your home. That new statement chair becomes your new favorite reading spot, or the vintage credenza you snagged finally gives your dining room a facelift, along with the extra storage it's been missing.

One-of-a-Kind Furniture Selections

Spring cleaning reveals what winter let you ignore. That coffee table with the scratched finish. The dining chairs that don't match anymore. The sofa that's seen one too many movie marathons. You've nested through winter, but now the sunlight is pouring through your windows…and suddenly your furniture looks tired.

A Spring refresh isn't about replacing everything, but rather about finding those new accents and statements that make everything feel new again. Another Man's Treasure helps Lexington homeowners do exactly that with furniture nobody else has.

Since 1991, Dennis and Dottie Gibbs have curated a mix of new furniture, manufacturer closeouts, and distinctive second-hand furniture. We're not a thrift store. We're a furniture store in Lexington, KY, specializing in pieces you won't find at chain retailers (or your neighbor's house).
